Welcome to Evil Cowtown Inc

This is the first post, in hopefully many to come, of the newest Sacramento Kings blog (and by newest the first to pop up at this moment in time) on the internet, Evil Cowtown, INC. Hopefully I won’t have to define the name for Kings fans as many already know what the “Cowtown” refers to.

That being said, I’ll define it for those who won’t quite understand the reference. In 2005, the Director of Player Personnel, Jerry Reynolds, made a reference to the “Cowtown” remark by saying that Chris Webber didn’t want to go to that “Evil Cowtown”. It always stuck with me, and as I’ve posted many times on Sactown Royalty, I’ve submitted the moniker “EC” as a reasonable way to describe Sacramento, and this is mostly because I find it amusing.

Now, I will also submit there are other reasonable nicknames. The best, in my view, is definitely the “River City” moniker no matter how common it is, it’s very descriptive of what kind of city it is. The Sacramento is a wide slow moving river that spans from the Northern part of the Central Valley, and dumps into the Delta on the South, and yet, spans a generation of communities.  The other “river” is the American, and for whatever it’s worse, it’s a smaller, yet more aggressive river that could only be tamed by the existing dam, Folsom (not to be confused with the city). In a way both rivers do a reasonable job of identifying the city at it’s root of the personality. Of course, the one part that can’t be underestimated is the impact that both rivers have had where they meet (where Discovery Park is).

So in a sense, among other things, is that you need to also understand terms. SpeedRacer (as coined by Tom Ziller of Sactown Royalty), is Kevin Martin. RC is the River City. EC is the Evil Cowtown. (If you weren’t able to figure this out by now, consider me your painful guide into the world of awful ebonics.) Both of these terms refer to “Sacramento” as the larger community. I’m not going to define any of these terms again. If you don’t know them, it’s just your fault. And, among other things, I don’t give a shit if you like it or not.

Last, but not least, this is a Kings blog. I like to discuss the games themselves, the salary cap, the consolidation of the media (like the death of the Seattle Post Intelligencer (Seattle PI) which was announced hours ago) and the effect this has on coverage, and to rant and rave on anything that grabs my attention (this will be likely more or less what I do). Welcome to the depths of my despair. The cowbell awaits you minions. Can you ring it? Or better yet, can I continue to meet the daunting challenge of writing about a team that is currently 14-52? We Shall See.
