Game #71: Memphis Grizzlies at Kings

I’m back. My baby has come back to me intact, and I’m fired up ready to go. (Okay maybe not without Reke around.) Also, I just really like this song. Usually I try to connect the song to the team, but I don’t feel like it tonight. With Memphis, I have plenty of options. Oh well.

This is going to be relatively short. (If you don’t know, read the scouting report from HT over at StR. It’s in depth and he does a terrific job.)

Tyreke will miss the next 2 games. This shit happens, but it’s pretty simple: The Kings are just going to let this thing be fully healed. They don’t “need” to win games to make a playoff push. They don’t need to rush a young player back from something to get more fan support. The Kings will be on the road, and Tyreke will return before the next home game (after tonight of course). Word is that he’ll return in Boston against Rajon Rondo (hopefully to pound Rondo into mincemeat).

This is an excellent decision by the team to sit him down. (I’ll discuss the ROTY stuff tomorrow. Again.)

As far as Memphis, interior defense is a major concern. The Grizz have Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol playing well throughout this season. The funny thing is that the Grizz are above 500 for the first time in several years but aren’t good enough to make the playoffs because they aren’t 10+ games over 500. The Kings pace, o-efficiency and d-efficiency are here. Ditto with the Grizz here. The Grizz play at a bit slower pace, are quite a bit better offensively, and only marginally better defensively. (The Kings now have climbed upwards in the o & d efficiencies since the trade of SpeedRacer.)

The Kings will have to be tremendous rebounding on the defensive end if they are going to win. Zach Randolph is one of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA, and Marc Gasol isn’t too far behind.

Mike Conley, while not the major player some (like myself) thought he might become coming out of Ohio State, is a solid player who does what Lionel Hollins asks of him. OJ Mayo is what he is, but if he gets hot from the outside it’s going to be a long night.

Rudy Gay is one of the athletic freaks in the NBA, and so is Donte Greene. Because both Gay and Greene are both from the metro DC/Baltimore area, there is a bit of a regional rivalry there. (If you were to list top metropolises of basketball talent, DC/Baltimore is probably higher than New York right now. If you told me that 10 years ago, I might have pissed on your face. Just off the top of my head, you have players like Carmelo Anthony–Bmore–Kevin Durant–suburban MD–and others that I can’t even remember. Hopefully I’ve made my point.) Either way, it’s good a test for the Show in that he hasn’t been consistent much since the New Year has been ushered in. If the Kings are going to win, Donte Greene must play as we all know he can.

As far as Randolph vs Landry, Landry can’t stop Z-Bo. He’s not likely to keep him off the o-boards all game. What he needs to do is attack Z-Bo early and often on the offensive end hoping that foul trouble can keep Z-Bo out of the game. Spencer Hawes needs to play well. WaBeno Udrih needs to make the Grizzlies mortally fear the Yeti as the Clippers clearly do. Cisco “the kid” Garcia needs to play well in Reke’s absence. The Kings have to protect the home court. If they don’t? Nothing really lost. If they do? Fans get to see the Kings beat an above 500 team. It’s almost like the San Francisco treat without the treat of hastily prepared food.

Game is at 7pm PST, TV is CSNCA, and Radio is 1140. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Hasheem Thabeet is starting, and Marc Gasol is out. (I don’t know why I didn’t figure that out.)
